WHAT ARE DERMAL FILLERS?

Dermal fillers help to diminish facial lines and restore volume and fullness in the face.

As we age, our faces naturally lose subcutaneous fat. The facial muscles then work closer to the skin surface, making smile lines and crow's feet more apparent.

The facial skin also stretches a bit, contributing to this loss of facial volume. Other factors that affect the facial skin include sun exposure, heredity, and lifestyle.

WHY ARE DERMAL FILLERS SO POPULAR?

Hyaluronic acid lip fillers are a popular choice for non-surgical lip augmentation, primarily due to their effectiveness, relative safety, and natural-looking results. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the body's connective tissue, and its main function in the skin is to retain water to keep tissues well-lubricated and moist. Here’s a detailed overview of hyaluronic acid lip fillers as part of our Lip Augmentation course.

BENEFITS OF LIP INJECTING TREATMENTS

  • Control Over Lip Volume: The amount of substance injected can be controlled, allowing the aesthetic practitioner to adjust the lip volume during the procedure for desired results.
  • Gradual Progression: Injections can be given gradually over different appointments until the desired results are achieved.
  • Less Bruising: There may be less bruising and swelling compared to other dermal fillers.
  • Long-Lasting Results: Results are reasonably long-lasting but not permanent, generally ranging from six months to a year depending on the specific product used.
  • Reversible Results: If the outcome isn’t as expected, hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved using an enzyme called hyaluronidase, making them one of the few reversible fillers.
  • Allergic Reactions Are Uncommon: Since hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the body, allergic reactions are rare. However, allergies to other components in the filler like lidocaine can still occur.

THE PROCEDURE

  • Consultation: Discussing goals and expectations with a qualified practitioner who will explain options and outline the best plan.
  • Preparation: The area around the lips will be cleaned, and a topical anaesthetic or ice may be applied to numb the area.
  • Injection: Using a fine needle, the filler is injected into predetermined areas of the lips. The process typically takes about 20-30 minutes.
  • Post-Treatment: Immediate mild swelling and possibly some bruising, which typically subsides within a few days. Patients are usually advised to avoid intense physical activity, high heat exposure (like saunas), and to not put pressure on the treated area for the first 24-48 hours.

TREATMENT, RECOVERY & AFTERCARE

  • Recovery Time: Lip filler injections do not usually require downtime, and most people can resume their normal activities the same day.
  • Aftercare: It’s important to follow the aftercare instructions provided by your practitioner, which may include staying hydrated, avoiding lipstick or other lip products for a day or two, and not manipulating the lip area.

SIDE EFFECTS

While HA fillers are considered safe, they are not without risks. Common side effects include redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection site. More serious but rare complications can include infection, allergic reactions, or vascular occlusion (blood vessel blockage).

Dermal fillers can be very helpful for those with early signs of aging or as a value-added part of facial rejuvenation surgery.
